This article will help you to calculate the Essential Expenses of studying in the UK. If you are looking for the living expenses calculator, then you should click here.
Normally, the tuition fees in the UK ranges from INR 13,00,000 (£14,000) to INR 30,00,000 (£26,000) per year. However, this will be subject to the course that you are pursuing, and the university you are pursuing it from. You are highly advised to research for the university and its tuition fees. If you are wondering how to research for UK university, what factors you should consider and how to decide the best university for you, then you should consult this extensive guide that I have prepared to walk you through the entire process. You will normally find it on the Fees and Funding/Finances section on the page of the course you are looking at.
For Undergraduates and PhD Students
You will be paying your tuition fees annually. Then, you should calculate the total tuition fees for the entire duration of your course. Normally, an undergraduate course would cost anywhere between INR 15,00,000/per year to INR 22,00,000 per year. Obviously, the more prominent universities would have higher tuition fees. Moreover, it also depends on the type of course that you intend to pursue. Therefore for a three-year degree course, you can estimate the total cost to be around INR 50,00,000.
It is safe to say that the postgraduate tuition fees will also fall under the bracket of INR 15,00,000 – 20,00,000 per year subject to the type of course and university. However, for the exact estimates of the tuition fees, you are encouraged to browse university website. You can either start by browsing on the UCAS website, or you can simply look for the top universities in the UK for the course you wish to pursue on Times Higher Education.
Word of Caution

You should only check out the university websites for the correct fees for international students. If you don’t know where to start, you can simply look around UCAS. You will be able to find a general idea of the tuition fees for the course that you are looking for.

Moving to the UK Expenses
The cost of moving to the UK from India as a student is subject to several factors. You have to pay circa INR 25,00,000 each for the Visa Application Form and the Immigration Health Surcharge. But, there are several other expenses that you need to consider.
For instance, you need to show proof of savings (~INR 30,00,000+ depending on your course) in order to apply for the UK student visa. Moreover, you also need to consider other expenses for the stuff you plan to buy and take from India. This section will walk you through all the expenses that you would need to make and explore the entire cost of moving to the UK as a student from India.
Visa Application Form
To apply for the visa, you will have to pay about INR 30,000. This is compulsory as without making this payment, you will not be able to apply for the Tier-4 Visa.
Immigration Health Surcharge
This serves as a payment towards the medical services that you are going to be taking advantage of when in the UK. You might have heard of healthcare being free in the UK. Well, technically, for us Indians, it is not. We have to pay the IHS, which is about INR 30,000. This payment is directed towards the healthcare in the UK and it is non-negotiable.
Proof of Savings
Now, for all the students who are considering moving to the UK from India as a student, do you know how much do you need to show in savings? When you’re applying for the UK student visa, you need to show that you have sufficient savings in your account.
What is the amount that I need to show?
It varies from university to university, and course to course. However, a general formula for calculating the amount of savings that you will have to show is given below.
Amount of money you need to show = Tuition fees (total amount) + living expenses + accommodation fees
When you are moving to the UK, surely there are a lot of things that you plan to buy. Items like clothes, suitcases, electronics like laptops, phones, power adaptors, utensils, stationery items and the list goes on.
It is important that you know that you should not buy a whole lot of stuff. This is because some of the items can even be bought in the UK for a similar price. So, be a bit more economical when it comes to buying stuff, especially clothes. Why? From personal experience, taking a whole bunch of items from India did not turn out to be helpful because when I arrived in the UK, my lifestyle changed. And basis that, I had to change a lot of things in my wardrobe and even in my kitchen. I have even prepared a guide for the things that you should pack, which you can access here.
For now, you can safely assume that this amount will come anywhere between INR 50,000 and INR 60,000 depending on the kind of items you are buying, and more importantly, how many are you buying. Although, for buying these miscellaneous items you are highly encouraged to review my packing guide because it clearly details that I discarded about INR 15,000 worth of stuff. Therefore, before you spend more money here, think wisely.
Here is an estimated total expense that you are going to bear while moving to the UK.
|Immigration Health Surcharge||30,000|
|Proof of Savings||Tuition Fees + Living Expenses + Accommodation fees|
